Playoff Results 11/20

Semi Final 1:
Horsemen 77, The Gut 72

The Gut and The Horsemen faced off in a highly anticipated semi final game. The Gut came out on the offensive as usual paced by Jim Donnelly with 21 points and Junior De La Hoz with 19. The Horsemen however weathered the storm and came charging back behind Ben McAuliffe (22 points), Paul Powloski (17 points) and Shane Truddell with 18 points and held on late for the 77-72 victory launching them into the finals in their first year in the league!

Semi Final 2: Birdmen 81, Up-A-Ton 53

The shorthanded Up-A-Ton squad hung in early behind the inside play of Rob Scarpato (28 points) and the slashing drives of Seth Iadaorla (11 points). However there was too much Birdmen fire power in this one- Dominique Bryant had 23 points while Sam Fanfan chipped in 22 and Nefali Gonzalez added 15- as the Birdmen cruised in the second half to the finals.

Final: Birdmen 73, Horsemen 71 (OT)
An instant classic in the finals. The Horsemen jumped out early based on their balanced attack as Fran Defalco (8 points) and and Shane Trudell (14 points) got going early. The Birdmen counter punched with the play of Jeremy Bridge who did the bulk of their early scoring on his way to 13 points. The Horsemen made a run in the second half behind the shooting of Mac Roy (19 points) and the slashing play of Paul Powlowski (19 points). Late in the game the Horsemen looked to have it in hand, but a few missed throws and a 3 from playoff MVP Dominique Bryant (19 points) opened the door for Nefali Gonzaelz's (17 points) deep 3 to tie the game and send it to overtime. In OT play continued to seesaw. The Birmen's Eve St Cyr was fouled with 1 point lead, he hit the first to make it a 2 point lead, then air balled the second giving the Horsemen 9 seconds to work with. Mac Roy drove and found Paul Powlowski to tie the score at 71 all, however in the confusion after the free throws the Horsemen fouled intentionally with 4 seconds left in a tie game, sending Nefali Gonzalez to the line where he put the game away with 2 free throws. Great game, The Birdmen claim their first fall league title.

Thanks once again to all the teams and captains we'll see you in the freshly minted BVBL SPRING LEAGUE!

Playoff Results:
11/13

Birdmen 67, Blazers 58

The Blazers got 18 from Jay McKinney and 16 from Zach Valliere but it was not enough to stem the tide of the balanced Birdmen attack. Nefali Gonzalez lead the way with 20 in the victory while Jay Snow added 17 and Sam Fanfan 12 as the Birdmen (6-2) advance to the semifinals. The Blazers conclude their season at 1-7 and The Birdmen will play in the 7 PM game next week.

The Gut 86, Douglas Waterslides 63

League MVP Ryan Cain had a pedestrian 28 points as The Gut opened up a 10 point halftime lead to cruise into the semis. Dan Koen added 17 while Jim Donnelly chipped in with 15 and Junior De La Hoz with 11 as The Gut advances to the semifinals to play #1 seed The Horsemen. The 'Slides got 30 from Justin Aldrich and 16 from Keenan Burke-Pitts in the defeat. Standout guard Mitch Bajema was attending the Catalina Wine Mixer and was unable to play. The Gut will play in the 6 PM game next week, while The 'Slides will pack away the yellow jerseys for another year.

Up-A-Ton 65, Worcester West 62

They are looting in the streets of Upton! From Bettanos to Woods Pharmacy, up to Applegates Weekend and over to...I'm running out of defunct Upton Landmarks...Anyways The game of the night in the BVBL was clearly this one. Worcester West behind the play of Dave Douliette (23 points) had a 7 point halftime lead in this one and it looked like business as usual. However Up-A-Ton (coming off 6 straight losses) showed increased balance and offensive poise and crawled back in behind the play of Bob Chalmers (9 points), Tom Casey (11 points) and the immovable object known as Rob Scarpato (26 points). The tide was turned on an under out of bounds play when point guard Jason Gosselin threw a lob to the rim that Scarpato caught and fired through for an emphatic dunk. Worcester West would not go quietly however with Joe Laroche (13 points, wreaking some havoc on both ends) and a few deep Jim Quinilven threes (10 points). In the end it was Scarpato's play down low and solid down the stretch free throw shooting from Gosselin that carried the day for Up-A-Ton. They advance to the 7 PM game vs The Birdmen on Sunday, while Worcester West concludes their season at 6-2.

Player of the Week: Rob Scarpato, Up-A-Ton. 26 points in the upset victory...when asked for a quote Rob replied "Scarpato SMASH! Scarpato SMASH!" thus frightening away the onlooking assembled media.

Birdmen 83, Up-A-Ton 43

Behind the scoring of Nefali Gonzalez (26 points) and Sam Fanfan (19 points) The Birdmen conclude their season at 5-2 and lock up the 3 seed for the postseason. Up-A-Ton was paced by Jason Gosselin with 17 points and Tom Casey with 11. Up-A-Ton lost a 3way coin toss for the spot but their 1-6 made them the 7 seed over 508 Athletics who sported identical 1-6 records due to their head to head win.

The Gut 124, 508 Athletics 68

Apparently dissapointed by the lack of halloween opportunities due to the weather, The Gut showed up dressed as the 1988 Loyola Marymount team. The 124 point outburst was lead by Dan Koen with 40, Ryan Cain added 26 in the win, while Jim Donnelly chipped in 22 of his own. Dan Schweitzer also added 19 for the victors. 508 Athletics got 36 points from Lloyd Kennedy and 14 from Justin McCann in the victory. The Gut locks up the 4 seed at 5-2 while 508 will be the 8 seed at 1-6.

Horsemen 62, Douglas Waterslides 56

A tough matchup between 2 depleted teams. The Horsemen playing with only 5 edged Douglas Waterslides in the 8 PM game. Ben Macauliffe lead the way for The Horsemen with 23 while Mac Roy added 18 mostly from the perimeter. Shane Truddell also chipped in 12. The 'Slides were paced by Mike Balderelli with 24 and Jstin Aldrich with 18. At 3-4 the Slides will take on The Gut next week in playoff action. Meanwhile The Horsemen lock up the #1 seed and will tangle with 508 Athletics.

Worcester West 68, Blazers 54

Balance balance balance is how Worcester West gets it done. Mike Dzciek lead the way with 18 points mostly from beyond the arc in the 9 PM victory. Jim Quiniliven added 12 as did Mike Consolmango, while Dave Douliette had 10. The Blazers were lead by Danny Suarez a mysterious character who is not playoff eligible but would be a nice addition for them in future sessions. He had 30. The Blazers will face the Birdmen in the 3-6 game, while Worcester West is the 2 seed and will face Up-A-Ton.

Player of The Week: Dan Koen, The Gut. A 40 point game and a win will almost always get you player of the week.

10/23

Horsemen 69, Worcester West 63

Using their usual balanced attack The Horsemen undid a 5 point halftime deficit and staked their claim to first place in the BVBL-Fall with a 6 point win. Paul Palowski (24 points) lead the way with assistance from Ben McAuliffe (20 points) and Shane Trudell (19 points). Worcester West was paced by Dave Douliette with 28 points and sharpshooting Jim Quiniliven with 13.  Many would say the energy of Steve Colorio swung the game in the Horsemen's favor. He was all over the floor in the early second half generating hustle plays left and right. The Horsemen will conclude their schedule with the Douglas Waterslides next week, while Worcester West will take on The Blazers.

The Gut 99, Up-A-Ton 60

Up-A-Ton lead by Colin Carr (25 points) kept it close early but the depth of The Gut and their outside shooting was too much to overcome. Birdmen will conclude their season next week with Up-A-Ton while 508 Athletics will face the red hot Gut.

Douglas Waterslides 66, Blazers 59

Former college teammates and all around pals Mike Balderelli (17 points) and Mitch Bajema (15 points) lead the way for The 'Slides in a past their bed time start. Keenan Burke-Pitts contributed solid floor play and Brian Collins and Kyle Dean chipped in some hard nosed D. Jay McKinney had 25 points for the Blazers mostly from downtown. Worcester West 61, 508 Athletics 46

Balance balance balance was the order of the day for Worcester West as they ran their record to 5-0. Worcester West started the game on a borderline absurd 26-0 run, however 508 Athletics should be credited as they cut it to 8 at one point in the second half. Paul Palowski lead the way for The Horsmen with 17 points, Shane Truddell chipped in 15 while Ben McAuliffe also added 15. The Birdmen were given additional offensive punch by Nefali Gonzalez with 11 points. The Birdmen will face 508 Athletics next week while The Horsemen will play Worcester West

Douglas Waterslides 66, Up-A-Ton 51

Despite the best efforts of Rob Scarpato (25 points) the outside shooting of The Douglas Waterslides held off the scrappy Up-A-Ton bunch in the 8 PM game. Justin Aldrich paced the 'slides with 20 and Mike Balderelli added 19 in the victory- with Keenan Burke-Pitts adding 10.  Tom Casey added 9 in the defeat for Up-A-Ton who will regroup and play The Gut next week. The Horsemen were lead in defeat by Shane Trudell (much to the delight of the expansive crowd) with 19 points and Ben McAuliffe with 17 points. The Horseman mounted a number of runs but The Gut had too much firepower in transition and form beyond the arc. The Gut (2-1) will take on Worcester West next week while The Horsemen (2-1) will play Up-A-Ton.

Douglas Waterslide 69, 508 Athletics 61

Despite 21 points from Lloyd Kennedy, 15 from Justin McCann and some hot outside shooting by Jim Kahler- The Douglas Waterslides held on for their first victory 69-61. Justin Aldrich had 12 in the victory- Chris Foley (yes that Chris Foley) had 10 in a fill in role and new acquisition Brian Collins played some solid D.
